John Knasas – Johnny ("Johnny Kansas from Texas") Knasas grew up in Houston, TX and began playing the saxophone at the age of 12. After attending high school in Texas, he went on to major in music education at Providence College, then continued his studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he received his M.M. in saxophone performance.

John performs in a variety of bands around New England including the Nightlife Orchestra, Blue Moon Orchestra, the Moonlighters, Swing Out Big Band, and Compaq Big Band. He also freelances playing in small groups and pit orchestras during the year. He has studied saxophone and woodwinds with Fred Hargis, Chris Kelton, James Bunte, and Rick VanMatre. At the University of Cincinnati he performed in the jazz ensemble with visiting artists such as Jim McNeely, Ahmad Jamal, Kenny Garrett, and Kenny Wheeler. John also studied arranging with Phil DeGreg and improvisation with Brad Goode.

John currently directs the North Smithfield Jr High Concert Band and Junior Jazz Band, in addition to coaching a jazz combo at Providence College. He also works with many private saxophone students in the northwest Rhode Island area.
